Going Back to your Roots?

Taking a break from colouring (or in all of our cases, being forced to take a break from colouring!) can actually come with its benefits.

It can help improve your hair’s overall condition, plus save you a little bit of pocket money too!

Having a small vacation away from hair colour is one thing, but what about if you wanted to break up with colour permanently and return to your natural roots?

After months, or in most cases years of regular hair colouring, seamlessly transitioning back to your natural colour can feel almost impossible, but with the right Quirker, game plan & knowledge, going back to your au natural can feel incredibly liberating and stress-free.

So where do we start?

The first thing you want to do is to grow your hair out at least three inches that so you (and we) can get a good look at your natural colour.

You would be surprised as the amount of times we don't realise how little grey there actually it when looking at the entire head!

Then, we can take the best route from there…

Are you saying goodbye to highlights?

If your highlights have become too built up, too stripy/textured or too high-maintenance and you are desperate for a change, then ask your Quirker to add in some lowlights that match your natural roots.

This will help seamlessly blend the transition back to your natural hair colour. These lowlights should darken your entire hair colour and help reduce the effect of the highlights without going cold turkey.

Tip: A gloss colour can also be used at the roots to create a transitional colour between your natural hair colour and your current highlights, helping to blend the two and soften the regrowth.

What about if you don't want any more bleach?

We’re afraid this one is not as easy as slapping on a darker colour over your prelightened hair to match your natural. Doing this will just leave your hair looking dull, patchy and a little blagh, especially if your hair is porous from previous lightening sessions.

The best way to reverse your bleached look is for us to apply an all over colour that is only a few shades darker than your current blonde, and using a soft colour, eg. A semi permanent.

A good transition would be to opt for a warm caramel blonde shade or a warm Ash blonde shade to start with for example. You would need to repeat this process slowly, whilst the hair is going through its process safely, until you reach your natural shade.

When dealing with bleached hair, using the correct recommended home care treatments are vital in order to keep your hairs cooperation and also keeping it wonderfully healthy.

Are you on the dark side of the moon?

As you all know, nothing is trickier then disguising those pesky light roots next to the dark strands!

Often when going from a dark colour to light it’s easy to rush into the pre lightening process. What a lot of clients (and sometimes stylists) don’t understand is that when lifting dark hair, you will always be left with orange/red undertones until your desired colour is achieved.

When going from dark to light it is best to take it slow to maintain the integrity of the hair, opting for highlights to help blend the multi-tones showing through, maintaining the tone with regular tone top up appointments and as always, keeping the balance of protein and moisture to protect the health of those locks.

A good way to do this is to get your Quirker to create a base colour that is a little lighter than your current hair colour, but darker than your natural colour, adding in highlights to lighten the over all appearance.

Another good option is to go for a balayage effect on the lengths, this will help to balance your roots and ends as you transition.

Note* The warmth is not negotiable at the beginning of your lightning journey but in the right hands you will get there over time!

What about if you are currently living your best unicorn life?

Put those pastels back in their box! Unicorn/mermaid/bad ass beetle colours all look fab, until their upkeep starts weighing you down.

Whether you chose blue, pink, peach, or all the whole of the rainbow, these colours need a lot of work to stay looking good.

Because pastel colours are notorious for fast fading, this makes them easy to grow out once you have had your time with them.

Once the colour has faded to a good degree, applying an all over colour in your natural shade will help to minimize any discolouration.

Adding in some highlights and lowlights will help to add depth and dimension to your locks, whereas a gloriously gloss all over colour will help restore shine and vibrancy.

If you are a bold coloured beetle however, do not fret. We can do things to get you to a faded state, and then the above paragraph applies!

Extra tips and considerations whilst you are here and I have your attention!

When wanting to go back to your natural colour, please make sure to bring pictures with you when you see your Quirker. This will help them to work out the best route to take to get you to where you want to be.

Adding lowlights or shadowing can set up the perfect ombre for growing out your colour.

After your initial colour session, expect some fading to occur. Going back to your natural colour is a process, please understand that this factor is all part of the journey and eventually will become a distant memory.

So, will you be going back to your roots?

We think we have given you quite a bit to ponder there!
